Not bad for a windsurfer from Lake Garda!

Not bad for a windsurfer from Lake Garda!

Cabo Verde is an incredible destination for windsurfing but also very challenging. Our friend, team rider, and ambassador Lele has recently returned from a trip to the African archipelago and has shared with us some memories, tips, and super photos!

"In Cabo Verde, there are spots for all types of windsurfers: from flat water to side-on and extreme wave riding in side-off conditions. The island has its own rhythm to be discovered, with some spots requiring more skill than others. The actual difficulty then depends on how close you get to the critical section of the wave and how radical and aggressive you want to be in riding it."

According to Lele, for a trip to Cabo Verde, it is advisable to bring a wave board with a few liters more than your weight and 4.5/4.7 as sails.

During the trip, the most important challenges that Lele faced were getting back into the rhythm with ocean waves and getting used to the challenging conditions found in the second week.

However, he also had the opportunity to make some memorable outings, such as an afternoon at Alìbaba with a sustained wind from NNE and the following morning at Ponta Preta in the water with his travel companion Paolo and champion Victor Fernandez.

If you haven't already, I invite you to subscribe to the detour.surf newsletter: it's the easiest way to stay in touch, stay up to date on news, and not miss out on reviews and tips.

Now I leave you with Lele's photos and the spots of Cabo at work.

What do you think about it? Not bad for a windsurfer who lives on Lake Garda!

SPOT: SECRET

  • Conditions: side/side-off with a medium-small wave (not feasible with a medium-large wave)
  • Equipment: Tabou Da Curve 82 2022, GA-sails IQ-HD 4.4 2021 and 2023
  • Comments: "This spot is a perfect gym for training. The main difficulty is getting back to shore without sea urchins in your feet (I recommend booties and a lot of attention)."

SPOT: PONTA PRETA

  • Conditions: from small to medium-large with light wind, fortunately a couple of times the wind has turned more to the north making the take-off on the wave easier.
  • Equipment: Tabou Da Curve 82 2022, GA-sails IQ-HD 4.4 2023
  • Comments: "The wave at Ponta Preta is perfection, the wall looks like liquid glass! The shore break is challenging, and catching the wave with light and cross-off wind is not at all obvious.

SPOT: ALIBABA

  • Conditions: big
  • Equipment: Tabou Da Curve 82 2022, GA-sails IQ-HD 4.4 2021 and 2023 (the 4.0 could easily fit too)
  • Comments: "The length and power of this wave are incredible, but catching and staying on the wave is challenging, especially in the second section where the wave turns further and often passes under you even if you are at maximum speed."

SPOT: FONTONA

  • Conditions: medium-small
  • Equipment: Tabou Da Curve 82 2022, GA-sails IQ-HD 4.4 2021
  • Comments: "access is easy, and the wave is close to the shore, but the wave tends to close, and you need to be very reactive in leaving it in time. Maximum 2 entries!"
